Dr. Amanda Mixon
In therapy, you are the expert on your life. Together, we work to address your presenting concerns.
Research shows that the strongest predictor of therapeutic success is the relationship between client and therapist. I prioritize building client rapport while tailoring my services to the specific needs and particularities of each client. Maintaining mental health and well-being requires conscious practice. Developing that practice is one of the bravest journeys of the human experience. It would be an honor to be a part of that journey with you.
My road to becoming a therapist has been somewhat circuitous. I grew up in rural poverty in East Texas and was attuned to the psychic pain of that region at an early age. I pursued a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine because I wanted to understand the social and historical conditions that produced and maintain suffering in East Texas. My research focused on community healing practices developed by activists in mid to late-twentieth-century social justice struggles in the U.S. south. After graduation, I returned to Texas to serve my people as a professor of social theory, working at the University of Texas at Austin, Texas State University, and the University of Mississippi. It was in the classroom, where I helped individuals come into consciousness about themselves and their communities, that I realized my calling towards psychotherapy.
